The Applegate's Linen Marker was made and sold by Applegate Chemical Company, who manufactured the indelible ink for the printing.  This press is constructed mostly of solid hardwood and cast iron sides with those sides having molded raised letters highlighted with gold-colored paint.  This press was used to mark linens used by hotels and hospitals in the 1920's in order to identify ownership of the linens used in those public facilities.  The Applegate Chemical Company was founded in 1898 and is still business in Wauconda, IL.  I found the ads shown in the photos in a publication called "The Modern Hospital", March 1922, which featured many ads from various hospital vendors.  I will include copies of the ads with this antique press.    The printing plate, that is included on this press, reads "Hotel Franklin Square".   I'm not sure whether this hotel is still in existence or not.
Seller Notes This press is somewhat worn from usage and the bed of the press has a depressed spot where something heavy was left on it. The name on top is worn off just a bit, but considering the piece is probably almost 100 years old, it's in good shape! The raised/forged name and wording on the sides are in very good condition.
