Metal carbides are characterized by their extreme hardness and resistance to high temperatures, and are used as abrasives, and in cutting, drilling, grinding, and polishing tools. In the world of metallurgy, to have something that is precision ground is to have a product with a high degree of exactness in which produces a smooth finish. To be polished is to have a smooth finish which enhances the look of an item, prevents contamination, removes oxidation, creates a reflective surface, and prevents corrosion. To have a chamfered end is to have a symmetrical sloping surface at the edge or corner.
