Hi Folks!   Today for your consideration, I’m offering a working, recapped Sprague TO-4 Capacitor-Resistor Analyzer.   The tester reliably and reasonably accurately measures the capacitances of all types of capacitors from around 10 pF-2000 uF and resistances from 2.5 Ohms to 25 Meg Ohms.    It will also check wiring and other high resistances, AND reform electrolytic capacitors!   If you are working with older electronics or tube equipment, this is THE piece of test equipment to get!   The display uses a type 1629 Magic Eye tube as an indicator.  The original tube was very dim, so I replaced it with a beautiful, hand selected bright tube!   The 1619 was also replaced (no filament). I checked the other two tubes on my TV-7 military transconductance tester for quality and shorts.   Both the12J5 and the 1619 are healthy, and way above minimum test values. The 12J5 reads an 88 with 50 being minimum. The 1619 reads 82 with 43 being minimum.   I have replaced all of the leaky “Black Beauty” (also known as BBoD or Black Beauty of Death caps for their horrendous leakage) capacitors.   I also heat shrink sleeved a wire that had brittle insulation flaking off it. IF SOMEONE OFFERS YOU A TO- SERIES ANALYZER AND THE REFERENCE CAPS HAVEN’T BEEN REPLACED, RUN AWAY!  THINGS WILL ONLY END IN TEARS FOR YOU, AS THE CAPS ARE ALL LEAKY, ACCURACY IS NOT POSSIBLE, AND THE UNIT WILL ULTIMATELY FAIL.   More importantly, I made sure the replaced reference capacitors used to set the base line for readings were dead nuts on value.    If they aren’t right, the test set won’t be as accurate as it can be. That’s why the values I got testing my set of reference caps were so close to their actual values! Here’s the test results: CAP         READING   Notes 10 pF         8 pF 100 pF      99 pF (C1),  91pF (C5 scale) 200 pF      188 pF 1000 pF    840pF (C1), 1000 pF (C2)   .005 uF    .005 (C2), .0038 uF (C1 End of Scale Compression, off 1/8”) .02 uF      .019 uF    .1 uF        .09 (C2), just under .1 (C3)         .5 uF        .5 uF (C3), .4uF (C2 End of Scale compression, 1/8” low) 2 uF         1.85 uF           33 uF       28 uF  (End of Scale compression, 1/8” low) 50 uF       51 uF (C4) 38 uF (C3End of Scale compression, 1/8” low) 103 uF     105 uF   I also checked a resistor, and the 150 Ohm 2% tolerance part was dead nuts on.    For the high voltage insulation check, I used a 1000 M Ohm probe as a verified reference, and it read 1300 M Ohms.    This is typical performance for this series of instruments. Use that scale for relative “go/no go” leakage readings.   As you can see, the instrument doesn’t like to take readings at extreme low values (C5 scale under 100 pF).    Readings at high ranges at the scale ends (.5 uF, 33 uF, and 50 uF) are skewed because of the compression of the scale.    Those values may seem way out, but when you realize that the scale at the upper end is highly compressed and the reading is only an eighth of an inch away from the actual value, it all makes sense.   As mentioned earlier, the unit will reform electrolytic capacitors.    I checked, and it will provide up to 650 volts DC, more than enough to reform whatever you have for (of course, use a voltmeter to make sure you don’t exceed capacitor ratings!).   Cosmetics are reasonable. The front panel does have some paint scrapes, scuff marks, and tape residue.    I gave the front panel and knobs a good cleaning. The meter movement works as it should.    The series suffers from meter scale mottling, and this piece is no exception.    The leather strap is in great shape for this series (most are usually missing), and this one rates at the high end quality wise.    The case is in pretty good shape. It is marked “E.C. Lightner” on the back with paint, and also has the same name inscribed on the bottom.    I’m selling this unit because I have a couple TO-6’s as Daily Drivers, so the TO-4 is surplus to my needs (I have way too much stuff!).    Reserve on the analyzer is $100. If I can’t get a “C” note for a working, overhauled, tested and guaranteed unit, it’s simply not worth parting with      To sum things up, the analyzer is fully functional within its quirks, and I will give you a three day inspection guarantee on it!    You can see that this is definitely not the typical Ebay pig in a poke, and that the item has value and promise.    It leaves here working well! Check my feedback, and bid with confidence!   Packed weight will be about 20 pounds. Packing materials will be approximately $10 as I have had to purchase those items. I will bill out packing materials and shipping AT COST. I will properly box and pack the TO-4 so it arrives SAFE. UPS and USPS are valid options. Fed Ex is a major hassle for me. If you want the analyzer to go via that carrier, understand that it may take an extra day or two for it to go out.  Any test equipment, body parts, props, pets, parts, children, gold bars, etc. in the background are strictly incidental and not part of the auction!   We take PayPal, and are always happy to accommodate buyers that don’t have it, or refuse to use it. We understand!   Yes, local pickup is always an option. It’s a “win-win” situation for us all!   I am usually able to ship within 24 hours of payment. On rare occasions, it may take me a little longer to get the item out due to work and other responsibilities.   Please feel free to ask questions, I’ll answer them as best as I can.    Check my feedback, and bid with confidence! 30+ years professional electronic technician/engineer, Master Certified Electronic Technician, FCC GROL licensed, 30+ years Amateur licensee, now Amateur Extra.   Thanks for viewing this auction!     -Tom  Herman, PhD., CETma   N1BEC/7
