The SMG-2 Geiger Counter/Radiation Detector produced by HAAK is designed to measure background radiation and identify radioactive items. The dosimeter allows the user to measure the average radiation dose for a one-hour or 24-hour period, as well as the accumulated dose. Measurement data is stored in non-volatile memory (allowing data storage without power supply for up to 2 years) and can be reviewed at any moment in the form of a graph or data table. Furthermore, the data can be exported to a PC via USB. Should the device identify a level of radiation that exceeds a specified level, it will inform the user by means of an audio signal.   Key Features Multi-language interface: English, Russian, German, French Measurement history storage up to two years and display in the form of graphs or data tables Direct data transfer to PC via USB Danger zone identification by means of on-screen diagrams Identifies average background radiation for the last hour, day or month Large, high quality 2” color LCD Li-Ion battery for up to 450 hours of non-stop functioning The SMG-2 dosimeter is a unique device that combines the benefits of a home use dosimeter (compact, universal, and cost efficient) with the high precision performance of professional class devices. How It Works The SMG-2 dosimeter measures the intensity of ambient gamma, beta and x-ray radiation, and uses the data acquired to show accumulated dosage information and background radiation amounts on its display. Measurement time can be configured to ensure high speed performance or optimal precision, with settings for 20, 40 or 60 second measurement duration.   The large, color LCD with backlight and a joystick instead of numerous buttons make for optimal comfort during use, even at night! The SMG-2 is stands apart from the competition with its large, color 2” LCD at a resolution of 240x320 px. The dosimeter’s display has enough space for all the information the user needs: actual radiation dose, average dose for the past hour/day, particle appearance graph, measurement time interval, final measurement level, battery charge level, surrounding air temperature, current time, and the system menu. To facilitate comfortable viewing of on-screen data in any lighting, the display has three modes of lighting (manually adjustable). Also worth noting is the joystick, which provides comfort and ease of use when controlling and configuring the device, serving as a much more efficient interface than multiple uncomfortable buttons. No need to keep appraised of the results all the time on your own. Simply set the built-in alarm to warn you in the event of danger! The SMG-2 includes an alarm that can be used to warn the user in the event that a certain user-specified level of background radiation is reached. This allows the user to avoid constantly checking in on the device’s readings. The alarm has two warning modes: heightened radiation and high radiation. Both modes can be configured to suit the user’s individual needs.   Radiation activity is indicated in the form of a graph, which allows the user to review shifts in background radiation for the past two years. The dosimeter displays gathered information not only in traditional numeric format but also graphically. Furthermore, the average radiation levels for the past two-year period are logged in the system’s non-volatile memory, allowing the user to review average radiation levels and accumulated dose stats for every hour of the past day and every day for the past two years. This data allows the user to assess shifts in background radiation, identify radiation sources, and appraise accumulated radiation dosage, thus identifying any radiation-induced damage.   Measuring accumulated radiation dosage allows you to better appraise the threat posed by exposure to radiation. Unlike most dosimeters available to the public, which allow the user to identify the general state of radiation in the environment by displaying ionizing radiation levels, the SMG2 radiation detector can also measure accumulated radiation dosage. This parameter in particular gives a more wholesome understanding of the threat level posted by surrounding radiation. Why is this? Back in the 1950s, specialists assumed that the primary threat posed by radiation lay in burns and radiation sickness, which were only caused by exposure to high levels of radiation. However, studies into the effects of radiation on the body in the 1970s-1980s showed that lengthy exposure to small doses of radiation can be even more harmful than a singular burst of high level radiation. Lengthy exposure to radiation can manifest later on in the form of mutagenic and carcinogenic afflictions. The body’s tendency to “absorb” radiation leads to incurable tissue and organ diseases. As such, knowing accumulated radiation dosage, as provided by the SMG2 Geiger Counter, is far more important than knowing only the current radiation levels, which only results a limited picture of the threat posed by radiation. Measuring accumulated radiation dosage allows the dosimeter to cut down time spent at a location with an unusually high radiation levels, thus helping the user avoid a substantial threat to their health. To find out when to leave an irradiated location to avoid harm, simply set the device to display saved data for the past 24 hours or several days. Reviewing this data from time to time will allow you to notice heightened levels of accumulated radiation and leave the area in a timely manner. The device’s large measurement range allows it to measure accumulated dosage for lengthy periods of time (up to two years).   Logged data can be viewed on a PC after being exported from the device via USB. The dosimeter is equipped with a USB interface that allows the user to export all accumulated data from the device to a computer. The information gathered by the device is much easier and more efficient to review on the PC. This also allows for backing up records to other mediums and later comparing them with future records. The dosimeter is truly easy to use! Our dosimeter is aimed first and foremost at average users who don’t specialize in anything even remotely related to radiation research. As a result, the device is comfortable and easy to use. The device’s control mechanism utilizes a joystick instead of a more typical set of multiple buttons that often cause confusion. Furthermore, the dosimeter is equipped with a large, quality LCD and provides the user with an intuitive menu that allows the user to gain a firm grasp on using the device in mere minutes.   Battery powered, charges via USB. The SMG-2 dosimeter is powered by a battery unit installed on its underside. The battery charges when connected via an AC adapter or via a USB cable to a computer or any other USB compliant device. This number of option means that you shouldn’t have any problems recharging the device. It’s worth noting that the device utilizes a BL-8N Li-Ion battery, which was initially designed for Nokia phones. In sight of this, the battery unit can be purchased easily enough should the need for a replacement ever arise. The dosimeter’s energy saving mode allows the device to independently record radiation levels for 450 hours straight. The dosimeter boasts an energy saving mode that turns off the display while the device itself continues to function and record radiation levels. In this mode, the device’s life is extended to 450 hours of non-stop operation! You can simply turn off energy saving mode and carry the device with you wherever you go , or leave it in a place of interest for a while, then switch it back to normal mode later and review the radiation measurement data that was accumulated over that time.   Guaranteed precision measurement. The SMG-2 was developed and manufactured in Russia by HAAK ELEKTRONIK. It passed official dosimeter testing procedures and has been certified. It has also successfully passed measurement accuracy testing.   Specifications: Display: 2” color TFT LCD (240x320 px) Detector: SBM 20-1 Geiger–Muller tube Measures: Ambient equivalent dose intensity from 0.01 to 999 mSv/h Gamma radiation from 0.1 to 1.25 MeV Current and average background radiation value Accumulated radiation dose Measurement error*: 15+6/(dose intensity in mSv/h)% Measurement time: regulated to 20, 40 or 60 sec Built-in memory: 17,520 measurements or two years’ worth (non-volatile memory) Data stored in memory: Average radiation dose for each hour of the past 24-hour period Average radiation dose for every 24 hours over the past 2 years Accumulated radiation dose per 24 hours by the hour or per month by the day (can be displayed in the form of a readable graph) Data display methods: graphs, numeric values Data export to PC: available via USB Alarm: regulated (2 modes) Display: uninterrupted (graphical/numeric) Built-in clock and calendar Built-in thermometer Power: Li-Ion battery at 3.7 V, 850 mAh (BL-8N) USB port AC adapter Independent operating time**: up to 450 hours Dimensions: 111x46x19 mm Operating temperature range: from -10°C to +50 °С * At a 95% confidence level. ** With display off (power saving mode).
