Due to inherent high power handling, stub tuners are especially valuable in high power applications where the matching needs to be achieved in a high power RF path with minimal signal loss. Also frequently used for examining amplifier stability versus load impedance. Note on dual stub tuners vs. triple stub tuners. Dual stub tuners: Dual stub can typically match a wide variety of loads. Contrary to popular belief that dual stub tuners can match every load, there exists a forbidden region of loads at some frequencies / high VSWR values when using dual stub matching. One workaround in the lab / test environment is to add one more variable - the length of transmission line between the dual stub device and the load. This can be accomplished easily in the lab by having different short lengths of low loss cable, or low loss adapters. Once an appropriate length of line has been inserted, the load impedance is transformed to a region the stub tuner can match easily. Triple stub tuners: Triple stub tuners add the third variable as the third stub and typically do not have forbidden region, and also allow matching over wider bandwidth.
