This is a native of the USA, found east of the plains and south of southern shores of the Great Lakes. Like most other members of its family it is a climber and does so by means of tendrils. The leaves have 3 - 5 lobes with characteristic glands at the base. The flowers have 5 petals and 5 sepals aranged around the ovary, which will turn into the passion fruit if pollinated. The flowers also have a distinctive corona of filaments. The flowers are purple/mauve and have a slightly spicy smell to them - a bit like a sweet wintergreen. These are followed by the fruit, green at first, but ripening to a golden colour and about the size of a hens egg. This fruit is edible and is used in jam/jelly and juice production along with the more normal South American types. The vine will eventually grow up to 4 metres or more, climbing on whatever provides support. It is hardy in Zones 5 - 11 and tolerates full sun to part shade. If grown in too rich a soil, it will produce leaves and stems instead of flowers.
