Freebase simply means it is not a salt. Pharmacologically freebase NSI-189 can pass through membranes more readily, making it more quickly absorbed sublingually. It is more potent by weight but easier to manufacture, making it cheaper to produce. NSI-189 phosphate is a salt and is therefore less potent by weight, and more quickly absorbed orally. Clinical research is focused on the phosphate salt due to its oral absorption properties, though the effects are in principle the same, absorption rates aside. Organoleptically both are white crystalline powders. Freebase NSI-189 is tasteless to mildly bitter making it easier to dose sublingually. NSI-189 phosphate has an acrid bitter taste making sublingual dose unpleasant.
