Heathkit IM-18 Vacuum Tube Voltmeter Refurbished Upgraded Calibrated Guaranteed Upgraded to eliminate both the ohms battery and 6AL5 tube and calibrated against laboratory standards This meter is fully calibrated and accuracy verified on all ranges. It is supplied with a calibration data sheet showing the accuracy on each range (see scan of actual data sheet for this instrument). It is fully guaranteed to meet or exceed the original manufacturer’s specifications and is supplied with an all-new user’s manual (see photo). This Heathkit IM18 is in excellent cosmetic condition. The plastic meter face has almost no defects (see photos) and the front panel is free of scratches or other defects. The case was repainted. The second-to-last picture shows a page from the 1976 Heathkit catalog. It gives all the factory specifications for the IM-18. The IM-18 sold new for $75.00 in 1976 and the inflation calculator says that would be $311.86 in 2015 dollars. Ever notice how most sellers of used VTVMs list their items? It’s almost always: 1) No probe(s) 2) No manual 3) No calibration 4) No guarantee and 5) No returns. What’s more, the seller usually says, “I don’t know anything about this and have no way to test it.” In contrast, I am a retired electronics engineer with many years experience in design repair, maintenance and calibration of test equipment. I have also been refurbishing and selling VTVMs on ebay for years. Every VTVM I sell always: 1) Has probes 2) Has a manual 3) Is fully calibrated 4) Is guaranteed and 5) Can be returned if buyer is not satisfied The last photo shows my electronics lab and the equipment I use to test and calibrate the meters I sell. A Heathkit IM-13 is shown being calibrated. VTVM calibrations are refrenced to the Fluke 515A, and the Fluke 8520A (items 16 and 17 in the picture). This VTVM has had the following improvements/modifications: The electrolytic filter capacitor was replaced with a new capacitor. (This model already has a silicon rectifier diode.) The ohms circuit was modified to eliminate the ohms battery (see photos). This improves accuracy, particularly on the low ranges, by eliminating the problem of poor contact between the ohms battery and its holder. It also eliminates one of the biggest problems with these instruments, internal damage caused by a leaking battery. The ac volts circuit was modified to eliminate the 6AL5 tube, replacing it with two 1000 volt silicon diodes (see photo). This eliminates the problem of zero drift on the low ac volts range caused by varying contact potential in the vacuum tube diode. The single input probe was replaced with a three-lead setup similar to that used in earlier model VTVMs (see photos). This eliminates the problem of poor ohms function on low ranges due to poor contact resistance in the probe tip switch. The black probe is for dc volts only and the red probe is for ac volts and ohms. There were no internal modifications to the input circuit, so a mult-function probe can still be used when available. This instrument is fully tested and guaranteed to work properly, not like the “as is” condition of most VTVMs sold on e-bay. If not satisfied, return within 14 days for a full refund of the purchase price. Buyer must pay shipping costs. See the accompanying photos. The accuracy specifications for this instrument are: Plus or minus 3% of full scale on dc volts and ohms Plus or minus 5% of full scale on ac volts (* except the 1.5 volt ac range) * Accuracy on the 1.5 volt ac range only may be off by as much as 15% or more due to non-linearity at the lowest ac voltage scale. These instruments should have had a separate meter scale for the lowest ac range (as many later models with larger meter movements do). HERE IS SOME FEEDBACK FROM BUYERS OF MY REFURBISHED VTVMs: (I have never received ANY negative feedback and the only complaints were because of two instruments that were damaged in shipment and another that developed an internal short.
