Use the tester any time along your fence to check for correct operation, or other problems such as leakage. Spark will consistently jump the 1 centimeter gap on the spark tester. From spark gap tables available on the internet, this corresponds to a voltage of about 20,000 Volts in free air. This means a very painful, but harmless, shock. This high voltage can penetrate thick hides effectively, and even large animals will respect it. We have done extensive testing, and even small animals such as rats are not harmed. Suitable for bears, moose, goats, pigs, cows, horses, Llamas, ect. This unit is NOT waterproof and should be put in a shed or barn. Otherwise it requires another enclosure for outdoor installation. Warrantee is 3 years. When buying units of this sort, reasonable expectations are helpful. Your fence must be clearly marked so the animals can see it easily. Not marking the fence clearly is simply cruel. Animals are not as smart as people, they don't know about electricity, and they take a certain amount of time, and shocks, to learn the fence. They will associate the fence marking with the shock. Adult animals, particularly adult animals that have previously been free-ranged, will challenge the fence repeatedly, and they will require more time to learn it. But they will learn it. Baby animals will learn quickly, but adult animals will require more patience. But once they have learned it, they will respect it.
