SIZE- 1/2" Diameter (12.7mm) Drill Shank Is Marked as "13 1/2" (Nominal 13mm) Length- 18" Nominal  OAL (Actual =  441mm or 17-11/32")    OAL = Total Overall Length  16" Nominal  TCL (Actual = 413mm or 16-1/4" )        TCL = Total Cutting Length From Tip To Top Of Shank SOME FEATURES OF THESE STEINMAX DRILLS- These Are Made To Fit SDS Bit Holders & Regular Drill Chucks      **See Important Fitment Notes Below Regarding SDS Plus vs SDS They Also Fit "Normal" Drill Chucks.          Sometimes Normal chucks are called "Jacobs" or "Scroll" or "3-Jaw" or "3 Finger". They are what is on a drill-driver or regular multi-use drill.   These original SDS fit regular chucks because there is no elongated 'plus' slot to mis-grip, pushing the bit off center.      In contrast, SDS Plus bits are a bit tricky to center in a 3-jaw (dog) chuck due to the extra slots. This can be dangerous if you are not careful. HIGH QUALITY SILVER BRAZED TIPS- Only Silver Brazed Tips are on these Steinmaxx drills. No glue type adhesives are used by Steinmax.   Impact Resistant Connection- Won't fall off or shatter if the drill is dropped. (Not that I've ever dropped drills...)   Oil & Water Proof Braze- It's OK to flood working area for dust control & cooling.          The tip will never fall off like some glued tips will when wet or oiled. Long Life Carbide is used on Steinmax drills-   These are expensive, qualtiy carbide for extreme wear & impact resistance with no flaking.   I believe they are the German equivalent to our ISO C-11 (FCC FC-11) grade. Soft-Sharpened Carbide Tip-   Easier starting on slippery materials, such as glazed ceramic & porcelain tile.      Tip- Start in 'Rotate Only' mode on slick surfaces such as glazed tiles to 'grind' away the 'glass. This way, you won't skid off your mark.              This tip only works with sharpened carbide tips, such as these. Non-Sharpened tips will skid even on 'Rotate Only' setting. Re-Sharpenable-   Expect 200 to 300 holes in hardened concrete, granite, diorite, etc before sharpening is needed.   In cinder block, brick & Type N mortar- Expect to retire long before you need to sharpen this drill. These have Fine Grade Carbide for precision (and super easy) sharpening. Example-      The above figures are based on real-world experiences with Steinmax drill bits.          I worked for years in a stadium complex made of Under-Water-Cured precast concrete-              That's the hardest possible concrete product. It ate drills as a hobby.          I've drilled & cored thousands upon thousands of holes, from 5/32" to 36 inch in those structures during my tenure.       We had tried them all, and we tradespeople would insist the purchasing agents procured Steinmax for our SDS needs. MORE STEINMAX FEATURES- German Precision Made- These fit & fit well.  There is no slop in the 'Good-N-Plenty' slots to wear away at your bit holder. The 10mm shanks are a real 10mm. Polished Black Oxide Coated  For rust resistance & durability  Polished to assist in dust removal Sharp-Dull Flute System- The 'Northbound' Flutes Are Very Sharp & The 'Southbound' are soft-sharpened.     (Northbound = Looking down the drill bit from the chuck end, they are the top sides of each flute) This Is Done To Give You Truly Round Holes & For More Complete Debris Removal-    Prevents 'Ovaling' or 'Walk Out' of the hole due to debris jamming, especially in softer material like brick or 3-bag-mix concrete.    Thread Cutting fasteners, such as Tapcon brand, will grip better & hold stronger in a perfectly round hole.    Undercut Anchors, both pre-set & through-set grip better on a truly round hole.    And, the dust comes out more thoroughly, making blow-out for epoxy anchors less nasty of a chore.      Sharp-Dull Flute System plus Sharp Carbide Tips will cut through rebar while pulling the drill our of the hole.         Dull flute drills can get hung up on the re-bar while retracting the bit.         This is safer for the operator- Cut rather than jam (providing instant 'tennis elbow', or knocking one off a ladder)       Sharp flutes offer more efficient debris removal. (Germans are all about efficiency!)         Clean holes offer quicker installation of drop-in or hammer-in masonry anchors with less pre-cleaning for  glue-in type                   epoxy (or sulphur for us old guys) anchors.  Caution! These flutes are sharp. Handle the bit with care.  Caution! These sharpened tips & flutes not only will drill through re-bar, they will also drill through buried gas, water, electrical                pipes. Know what's behind the masonry. Sharpened Tips-   They will drill through mis-placed steel Concrete Spot Inserts, MI Girders and the like. Tip Re-Sharpening Is Simple-   Use an inexpensive diamond rasp or rotary tool stone for touch ups. Water on the tool helps remove sharpening debris.   Drill Doctor brand sharpeners will easily sharpen these carbide masonry drills.  (Those are spiffy devices.) IMPORTANT FITMENT NOTES- It is often written that SDS and SDS Plus (or SDS +) are 100% interchangeable. This is not completely accurate. A) Do These Fit Older SDS Original Style?     Yes-  Perfectly     They are made to precisely fit all original SDS     Some Examples- Fit the Hilti TE-17 SDS perfectly. These also fit TE-12 & TE-22 etc, as well as many others such as many Bosch B) Do They Fit SDS Plus?     These are Original SDS  They are NOT SDS Plus (Sometimes shown as 'SDS +')     These drill bits will not fit all SDS-Plus chucks.       To fit SDS Plus, the long needle bearing guide in the bit holder bore must be floating so it can push back into the drill holder body.              Some do float & some don't.     Example- They Do Not fit first generation Makita SDS Plus HR2455.             I don't know which other Plus holders will or won't be compatible. Please check your manual or manufacturer if you have SDS Plus    You can certainly use your SDS-to-Round Shank adapter with these bits. C) Do They Fit Normal Hammer Drills With Plain Jacobs Style Drill Chucks?     Yes- Absolutely!     Because there is no extra alignment guide (as are found on SDS Plus), these will chuck up securely & straight in a normal drill chuck     Example- Normal scroll drill chucks, such as Jacobs, etc.  Most 3/8 will take this drill bit. All 1/2 and above will.    The shank is 10mm diameter = 0.394"  (3/8 is 0.375 = 9.525mm, but most 3/8 chucks open beyond 3/8" for tolerance taking. D) Do These Fit Normal Non Hammer Drill Chucks?     Yes- If a round 10mm bit fits, these will fit. Nearly all 3/8 chucks will accept 10mm.      Drilling will be slower than if in a hammer drill, but the sharp carbide will cut very nicely & reasonably fast.       I use them like this on cinder block sometimes.      Example- I use battery drills without hammer is 'Be Quiet!!!" situations. Steinmax bits are pleased to cut the holes using drill-only tools. E) Can I Use It Like A Star Drill?     Yes- But don't let my father see you!     The end of the shaft will take the beating, but because the upper side of each flute is sharpened, wear heavy gloves. F) Do They Fit SDS Max?     Nope! There are conversion adapters to use SDS & SDS Plus in SDS Max drills available. PICTURED SLEEVE NOTE- The Case Sleeves May Have Damage. Many Do Not Have The Peg Board Rings. Many of the sleeves are cracked or have ends missing. The actual drill bits are perfect & unused. Helpful Masonry Drilling Tips- A) Let the machine do the work. If you do not push on a hammer drill, it will actually create the hole faster than if you push on the tool.     Push just hard enough to work precisely, safely and in control.     If you want to push hard on the drill, these Steinmax will take it. No Problem! B) Never make a pilot hole in concrete or stone. (Pilot Hole = Smaller hole before the final hole.)      When drilling into a pilot hole, the bit can bind. This is a safety concern. You may be thrown or the bit may shatter.      If you must drill into an existing hole in stone, be sure not to bear down on the drill. Light pressure is required. C) Last but Not Least- Always, Always use eye, hearing & breathing protection.      Why Breathing Protection? Many concrete & masonry products contain silica. Please don't breathe silica dust.       Keeping the area wet while drilling is a good idea. (Which brings us to electrical safety...) D) Work Safely & Stay In Control Of Th eTool E) Enjoy The Project!! SDS DRILL TRIVIA- SDS originally stood for  "Steck, Dreh, Sitz"  (Insert, Twist, Seat or Put, Twist, Seat) My (German) father referred to SDS as the 'Spannen Durch System' (Loosely Translates to "Tighten By A System") For English speaking sales, manufactures tend to use 'Special Direct System'. SDS does not stand for- Spline Drive System (That's a totally different drill bit holder.)
