73 PIECE 14” VINTAGE WOOD TYPE -A-Z; 0-9; LIGATURES, PUNCTUATION. A spectacular, extremely rare complete font of 14” display type with multiple letters, full set of numbers, punctuation, two ligatures and a beautiful ampersand. The pieces are as follows: 2-A; 2-B; 1-C; 2-D; 4-E; 1-F; 2-G; 2-H; 2-I; 2-J; 1-K; 3-L; 2-M; 3-N; 3-O; 1-P; 1-Q; 3-R; 2-S; 1-T; 1-U; 2-V; 2-W; 1-X; 2-Y; 1-Z; 1- AE; 1-OE; 3-1; 2-2 (two different); 1-3; 1-4; 1-5; 1-6; 1-7; 1-8; 1-9; 1-Ampersand; 1-Exclamation point; 2- quotes; 1-dash; 4-periods = 73 pieces. Most of the letters are nicely toned with minor flaws associated with usage, i.e., minor scratches, surface scrapes, and small nicks on the faces. There are 10 pieces with damage which may or may not be clearly visible in the pictures that should be pointed out: one of the A has a 1/4” x 1/4” chip on the bottom outside leg; the B has a 3”long shallow diagonal dent along top of letter; one of the E has a 3/4” x 2 1/4” chip on the bottom bar; second E has a 1/2” x 1/4” chip on bottom bar; J has a small chip on bottom outside edge; one S has a small chip on top outside of letter; X has a 1/4” x 1 1/4” chip on top leg; Y has a small chip on of the top and a 1/8” x 1” chip on bottom; Z has a 1/4” x 2 1/4” chip on top outside edge of letter; 8 has a 1/4” x 1/2” chip at bottom center of numeral. This collection was found in a barn that belonged to a printer who retired around 1960, so the letters are at least 60 years old probably much older. No makers marks are found on any of the pieces, some have remnants of blank paper (shims) on the backs, and some appear to be hand carved. It’s an amazing find and I believe it should be kept intact and passed along to someone who can appreciate and even use them rather than sold piecemeal for decoration (individual pieces of this size have been sold for $50-$60 each, the ligatures and ampersand much more).
